Ever since March 2020 even as Covid-19 was harming the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in India and elsewhere, the Central government passed three Labour Codes in 2020 (the Wage Code was passed in 2019) in a deserted Parliament. Several State governments issued government notifications amending hours of work, etc. All these legal instruments hurt labour rights. The government's unholy hurry in passing the Codes could be justified if it promptly and instantly implemented the Codes as soon as they were passed. The groundwork was unplanned as many States are not still ready with the Rules under the Codes.
