In his new collection of poems Phelelani Makhanya explores various societal ills, global politics, the beauty of the natural world, and especially the theme of mortality. Phelelani Makhanya was born n Kwa-Maphumulo, KwaZulu-Natal. His work has been published in New Contrast, Botsotso, Litnet, New Coin, Kalahari Review and Praxis Magazine Online, as well as in the Avbob Poetry Project. He is the author of the poetry collections This Time I shall not Cry and My Father’s Blazer, and has been awarded the National Poetry Prize, Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Prize, DJ Opperman Award and the New Coin Poetry Prize.
